Ethiopia: Appeal for Religious Freedom in Ethiopia and strong condemnation of the abuse of human rights and freedom of religion
As a human being we believe that the human rights and freedom of religion is the cornerstone of any peace loving and democratic nations. Over the last several years Ethiopian Muslims have been subjected to various forms of religious discrimination and abuse and they have been living us second class citizens.
Ethiopian Muslims have been demanding peacefully to secure the right to administer their own religious affairs without government interference. To achieve this goal, they are engaged in a peaceful protest movement with very clear demands:
- Replacement of the unelected leaders of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs General Council (Mejlis) at all levels by leaders who must be elected openly and freely.
- An end to the dissemination and force doctrination of Al-Ahbash teachings in Mosques, Islamic institutions and other locations by current Mejlis leaders in collaborations with the Ethiopian government.
- One and only Islamic college and orphans development school must return to the Ethiopian Muslims and run by its legally elected people without government interference
- The killing of innocent Muslims must stop and the murderer must brought to justice
We demand the immediate release of Muslim leaders
The demand to these legitimate and constitutionally guaranteed religious rights have been communicated to several Ethiopian government agencies including to the office of the late Prime Minster.
